Thursday Group
Sometime in September 2007, Irene Ibanez saw an exhibit featuring the watercolor paintings of a certain artist, Roland Santos. Irene and Baby Sarmenta and some friends were taking weekly art lessons then and were open to learning new techniques from other artists. The ever resourceful Irene was able to contact Roland Santos who gladly agreed to share his techniques with others. Butch Abad, a friend of Irene and husband Nonoy learned about the class. Butch was interested in joining. As a start, Butch Abad, Irene Ibanez and Baby Sarmenta met with Roland every Thursday afternoon in Irenes place. When Butch became busy with his schedule, Irene and Baby called up friends and excitedly shared with them the new learnings they got from Roland.
Thus from the original three, Ming Syyap, Isabel Campa, Myra Vergara, Jennie Gabuya joined. From what began as a simple art class became more of a bonding, caring, enjoyable Thursday Group of enthusiastic entrepreneurs, housewives and retired professionals whose common desire is to do something creative. Some friends like Maripi Santos, Mita Ong, Mimi Nitura, Monette Gomez, Dulce Echague, Jenny Horn, Marit Sanchez and Joan Larrazabal would join the group whenever they were free. Sessions are held every week (now either Monday or Thursday) from 2pm to 6pm in the different homes of the members. Baby Sarmenta who has a son with hemophilia asked the group to donate a painting each in support for the Art for Life fundraising project of the HAPLOS Foundation, Inc. The Thursday Group has now evolved from learning to sharing the talents God has given to all. |

Tuesday Group of Artists
The Tuesday Group can trace its roots back to 1992, then pioneered by national artists, painter Jose Joya and sculptor Napoleon Abueva. First known as the Visual Artists Cooperative of the Philippines (VACOOP), the group came together as a small group of Filipino artists (who incidentally met first on a Tuesday) which over the years, has been cultivating a bold movement in art that embraces a very Filipino style of painting.
Over the years, the Tuesday Group has called many places its home, from the office of National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), to the cafeteria of the CBCP. Since 2006, they have had their sessions at Alans Grill in Cubao, where once a week they enjoy an afternoon plying their craft, honing their creative talents and gaining appreciation and support in good company. However, times have not always been as easy, and through the years, the group has had to struggle through many difficulties, from divisions and disputes, to the departure and passing away of some of their founding members. Yet the group has persevered, now under the guidance of veteran member Angel Cacnio, drawn together by a shared passion for imagination and creating works of beauty. From what was once simply a handful of dedicated artists, the group has grown, now to nearly fifty, its members both young and old, sharing a variety of innovation and experience. Still going strong as it nears its 20th year, the Tuesday group continues to remain at the forefront, one of leading promoters of art that we may truly call our own. |
